Arumon
In Taiwan, metalworkers refer to argon welding as arumon (with “argon” being アルゴン—arugon—in Japanese, and colloquially known as arumon here). Arumon flickers like a dream—bright, then dim—melting steel into a pool of liquid to fill the gaps. The blinding light can’t be looked at directly; one must wear a mask and rely on the body to remember the movements, the speed, the rhythm, the space. It reminds me of calligraphy. The heat spreading across the steel plates leaves behind ink-like blurs. The marks left by the grinding machine become vessels of light, scattered across the neatly staggered sheets like cunfa (traditional brush strokes for texture). I feel as if I’m standing amidst a landscape of steel and mountains.
